Benvenuti!
In this episode we take you on a journey into the heart of Sicily’s aristocratic past, through the majestic Castello di Donnafugata, famed as one of the filming locations for Netflix’s new adaptation of Il Gattopardo (“The Leopard”).
1️⃣ The Castle & Its Legacy
The Castello di Donnafugata lies about 15 km from Ragusa in southeastern Sicily.
Although the site has medieval roots, the building we see today was reshaped mostly in the late 19th century in neoclassical and neo-Gothic styles under the noble family Arezzo de Spuches.
It houses over 120 rooms (about 20 are open to visitors) with period furnishings, decorative stucchi, trompe-l’oeil paintings, a “music room,” a grand hall of coats of arms, and more.
Surrounding the castle is an 8-hectare park and garden, featuring a mix of French and English garden styles, a labyrinth built with local stone, grottoes, surprise water features (once playful traps), and a large variety of Mediterranean flora — more than 1,500 species.
Visiting the castle is like stepping into another era — you can almost hear corsets rustle, candlelight flicker, and noble footsteps echoing in the corridors.
Ragusa and the Hyblean countryside (Sud-Est Sicilia) form the backdrop for our exploration: rolling hills, dry-stone walls, olive and carob trees, sun-bleached fields.
The region is steeped in Baroque architecture, ancient traditions, strong local identity, and the interplay between rich landowners and rural communities.
This part of Sicily is less touristy (compared to Palermo or Taormina), which means more authenticity: local food, local stories, and real daily life.
After the castle tour, we immerse ourselves in the region’s flavors: gnocchi al forno, local wines, and genuine Sicilian hospitality at a neighborhood trattoria.
Il Gattopardo
/ The Netflix Series
Il Gattopardo (The Leopard) is a historical drama miniseries on Netflix, released on March 5, 2025. It’s based on Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s classic novel.
The series tells the story of Don Fabrizio Corbera, Prince of Salina, and his noble family in 19th-century Sicily, as the island faces the seismic changes brought by Italy’s unification (the Risorgimento).
Central themes: decline of aristocracy, social upheaval, tension between tradition and progress, love, betrayal, identity.
The series was filmed in multiple locations — Palermo (noble palaces, historic quarters), Catania, Syracuse, and interiors in Rome & Turin — all chosen to evoke the elegance and turmoil of that era.
Donnafugata is treated as the summer residence / retreat of the Salina family in the show. While “Donnafugata” is partly fictional in the novel, the show’s creators used real Sicilian estates and landscapes to bring it to life.
